I personally like the idea of cliques and social groups, so I'm going to toss in somewhat of a "clique" concept amongst the townspeople. Doesn't make sense? Read on, this will clear it up a bit for you...
First, there are three types of people residing in Rhythm:
Musicians
Plain and simple, even almost self-explanatory! These are the people who play music and chill on stage, tearing up an instrument in front of a cheering crowd. They have their own problems with drugs, relationships, depression, and life in general. They also are excellent actors who know how to make people like them. They're often slaves to public opinion, but not always.

Fans
The fans stand in front of the musicians, ogling them on stage and often wishing they were as rich and famous as their musical idols. The fans sometimes play instruments or sing on their own, but have not achieved the level of even an underground musician. This doesn't mean they don't have talent, but it does mean that they typically don't have the potential to become a big-time, all-star musician.

Others
Music is okay. It doesn't get them going, or slow them down. The others are just different from the people in the crowd. They don't go to concerts. The go to work. They don't dream. They stay on Earth. They like to just chill at home rather than feint at a performance. They typically rejected for not caring about music, but are sometimes liked.

As a member group, you will be assigned one of these three categories of member.
Now, time for even more of a type of "clique/group"!
Seeing as there are various musical styles, I've also decided to break it down even more and allow you too choose from various musical styles to further determine your place...
Classic
This is conservative, upper-class music. It's often heard at formal parties for the wealthy and takes several dozen people (typically) to perform an advanced, complex song. It's expensive to get into, and have a relatively small market. However, it is a the base and example that is set for other genres of music. It's complex beats and tones often inspire musicians to attempt to better the music in their own songs and pieces.
Mainstream
Easy to understand, this is the noise produced that made it very big, bigger than life in fact. The musicians and record companies involved with this music are living high on the hog and drive muti-million cars and travel the world on spare change in their pocket. (Pretty much) no matter what these people do, they're going to retire to a mansion on the coast of somewhere beautiful.
Note: This genre is not a single genre, but a variety. The reason these are grouped together is because the groups involved in this genre affect a lot of other groups.
Underground
Simple, these are the bands that make enough to get by, but not enough to go on tours or afford nice homes. They tend to either want to ascend to mainstream, but some love what they do and just want to be at the bottom, performing in local clubs and do their jobs. They're not polluted by public opinion, and tend to be very unique.

Metal
With drums of every sort going in a fast beat, a guy shredding a guitar faster than the roadrunner runs, a bassist tapping away to perfect a sound to keep a beat, and a man screaming out his lungs and heart, metal tends to be loved. The people involved in this genre generally see the world in a very realistic or idealistic manner and care slightly less about public opinion than folks of other genres.
Rock 'n' Roll
Gotta love this genre. It's been around a while, and is almost a classic genre most musicians begin in. The basics of rock is that it is a beginning for a lot of musicians, and sometimes even an end. Here, dreams are began and finished. Rock is simple and easy, but still very popular and idolized.
Rap
Interestingly enough, this genre originated from rock. When children in the slum areas dreamed of one day performing on stage, they would find rock beats and mimic them with whatever instruments they could find. Since then, it has become it's own style and even culture. Rap is loved by the youth, rated by the old, and still very popular.
Techno
Whether it appear in a rave or simply on the headphones, you simply gotta love the repeating beats contained in it. Dancing can be jumping up and down, with or not with the beat, and a variety of other moves. Techno is fun, not serious, and always an enjoyment to listen too.
Country
Typically not the most popular in a city environment, country is still very deep and insightful. It's fun to work too, remake, and even play. It's often not as heavy as many other genres, but it has it's bass and beats. It's easy to combine with other genres.
